who are the 2 groups that formed to create hinduism

the aryans and the dravidians

who are the dravidians?

people from the Indus Valley, they had matriarchal society and prayed to gods of daily life. they were into craftsmanship and agriculture.

who are the aryans?

lighter skinned people from Central Asia. they had a patriarchal system, and prayed to gods of war. their principle deities are associated with the sun.

what is monism?

the type of religion that the Hindus are, all rivers lead to one ocean

what is dharma?

ones ethical duty, and moral balance with life, their morals and what they think is right

what is karma

the belief that what goes around comes around, it stresses personal relationships.

the wheel of rebirth, reincarnation

salvation from samsara, eternal happiness. changeless bliss.

who are the three main gods of hinduism?

brahma, vishnu and shiva

what is brahman?

an essence without form, in everyone through atman, brahman is divine, there is no limit.

the creator of the universe. has 4 faces and sits atop a lotus flower.

the protector and preserver, the god who brings salvation. has 4 arms and has the vehicle of the eagle.

the destroyer and restorer. vehicle is the bull, holds a trident.

the female counterpart of brahma. goddess of learning and the arts.

female counterpart of vishnu, goddess of wealth, happiness, and good fortune.

female counterpart to shiva, mother goddess.

path of devotion, action, or knowledge

devotion yourself to a God, out of pure love and not selfishness.

living a good, just, and right life, in order to gain good karma. living in harmony with the social and the physical world.

not only reading, but understanding scripture. understanding atman and brahman through meditation and yoga.

acts of reverence, prayer.

a food offering to the gods that has been blessed.

what are the hindu stages of life?

student, householder, forrest dweller, and wandering ascetic.

what is a student?

from puberty to marriage, intensive study of vedas. learn the rituals and rules of hinduism and respect elders.

what is a householder?

from marriage to the birth of first grandchild, goal is to pursue a career and raise a family

what is a forrest dweller.

often men, but they may ask wives to accompany them. they leave to the forrest to avoid temptation and separate themselves from worldly possessions.

what is a wandering ascetic?

from the return to the community to death, they become people who neither desires or hates.
