Q

Name the 3 salivary glands

16
Q

What are tubuloacinar glands?

A

These glands have secretory acini - but the first part of the duct system also participates in the secretory process

17
Q

What are acini?

A
  • Secretory units

- Appear as circular structures on H&E stain

18
Q

What are lobules?

A

Glands are divided by connective tissue septa -into lobes (bunches of cells with CT in in between)

19
Q

What are serous acini and where are they found?

A
  • Secrete a liquid, protein product
  • Round/ovoid nuclei
  • Nuclei found at the basal surface of the cell
  • Cytoplasm appears pink/red in H&E stain
  • Mainly in glands located further away from oral cavity (parotid, and some in submandibular)
20
Q

What are mucous acini and where are they found?

A
  • Viscous secretions
  • Flattened nuclei, appears pressed against basal surface of cell
  • Secretory vesicles fill much of the apical cytoplasm
  • Mainly in glands located close the the oral cavity (sublingual)
21
Q

What are serous demilunes?

A
  • Mixed acini (serous and mucous)
  • Serous cells form small half-moon/crescent shaped structures
  • Serous cell attached to mucous producing acini - empty secretory product into space between mucous producing cells
  • Found in sublingual and submandibular glands
22
Q

What is an intercalated duct?

A
  • When the lumen of the secretory acinus iis continuous with the duct system
  • Leads from acinus to a larger duct
  • Cuboidal epithelium
23
Q

What is a striated duct?

A
  • Striations of columnar cells forming a fuct
24
Q

Name the 3 components of the mucosa?

A
  • Epithelium
  • Lamina propria (CT)
  • Muscularis mucosae
25
Q

Outer_____ layer

Inner _____ layer

A
  • Longitudinal

- Circular

26
Q

What is serosa?

A

Intraperitoneal (visceral) mesothelium

27
Q

What is adventitia?

A

Retroperitoneal, loose connective tissue

28
Q

What cells line the oesophagus?

A
  • Stratified squamous epithelium - non-keratinised
29
Q

Muscle in the upper oesophagus?

A

Skeletal muscle

30
Q

Muscle in the lower oesophagus?

A

Smooth muscle

31
Q

Epithelium found in the stomach

A

Columnar epithelium

32
Q

4 parts of the stomach

A
  • Fundus
  • Body
  • Pyloric antrum
  • Pyloric canal
33
Q

Name of pits in the fundic part of the stomach

A

Foveolae

34
Q

Glands in fundic part

A
  • In lamina propria

- Simple, straight

35
Q

Glands in the pyloric part of the stomach

A

Coiled mucous glands with deep pits
