Introduction first sentence
Across history, the French Revolution was renowned for its’ fight for rights and equality for all, abolishing the long-standing, oppressive ancien regime - achieved with the August decrees on the 4 August 1789 and the Declaration of the Man and of the Citizen on the 26th of August 1789.
Intro second sentence
It became the foundation of the new society, giving the people of France a chance to finally be recognised as citizens of a new state, ‘Liberty, equality, fraternity’ being the new national values. However, it was not perfect, as while equal rights were guaranteed by the National Assembly, it notably excluded French women.

Paradoxically, this blatant exclusion was the catalyst for several women beginning to question their place in society, inviting them to challenge the deeply embedded social, cultural, and political norms that limited their female autonomy.

Therefore, DORMAC’s influence on women autonomy was paradoxical: providing them a revolutionary vocabulary to justify resistance, but ultimately revealed the limits of the revolutionary ideals’ when women attempted to live by them - as it was designed for the sole use of men.
