Homeostasis Flashcards
(23 cards)
differences between endocrine and nervous systems
e= longer lasting and are slower and take place in the blood stream
how does the adrenal gland prepare the body for exercise?
increases heart rate
increases breathing rate
increases blood pressure
what does insulin cause cells to do?
absorb glucose from blood into cells
convert excess glucose into glycogen
what are the 3 main roles of the kidneys?
regulates water levels
regulates ion levels
removes urea
how is urea extracted and made?
deamination in the liver as excess amino acids are converted into lipids and carbs which produces urea
what is filtration in the kidneys?
where small substances pass from the blood to the tubule of the nephron
what does ADH do?
increases the water concentration in the blood
what does a dialysis machine have?
a partially permeable membrane
what happens in day 15-28 of the menstrual cycle?
the uterus lining is maintained
where are LH and FSH produced from?
pituitary gland
what does FSH do?
stimulates eggs to mature
what does LH do?
stimulates the release of a mature egg (ovulation)
what does oestrogen do?
stimulates uterus lining to thicken
what does progesterone do?
maintains the lining of the uterus
how does the combined pill work?
stimulates release of oestrogen which inhibits FSH so the eggs cannot mature and progesterone stimulates the production of cervical mucus
what are the two main causes of female infertility?
eggs don’t mature properly
eggs aren’t released properly
what hormones are used in fertility treatment?
FSH and LH
what does adrenaline do?
increases blood glucose concentration and blood flow to muscles
what can plants detect?
light
gravity
touch
where do plant hormones act?
locally
where are auxins used?
weedkillers as they disrupt the growth process and in rooting powders and they promote growth in tissue cultures
where is gibberellins used?
ends seed dormancy and promotes flowering and increases size of fruits
what does ethene do?
stimulates fruit ripening
