Flashcards in Homeostasis Deck (10):
1

What is homeostasis

The maintenance of a constant internal environment

2

What are the six things that need to be controlled

1- the body temperature
2- water content
3- ion content
4- blood sugar
5- carbon dioxide
6- urea

3

What are the two waste products

Carbon dioxide- a product of respiration
Urea- made from excess amino acids

4

What is the right temperature of the human body

37

5

Why does the temperature need to be controlled

If it's too hot or cold the enzymes will be damaged

6

What acts as a personal thermostat

Thermoregulatory centre= the brain

7

What does it contain that is sensitive to the temperature of blood

Receptors

8

Where does the brain receive impulses from

The skin

9

What happens when your too hot

Hairs lie flat
Sweat is produced and evaporates from the skin
Blood vessels dilate for heart to be transferred

10

What happens when your too cold

Hairs stand up
No sweat
Blood vessels constrict
Shiver - need respiration to release the energy
