What campaigns were there demurring the 1960s?

During the 1960s, there were campaigns for voting rights for blacks


What was attractive about the Nation of Islam to black Americans?

It attracted some Americans who were frustrated with the lack of progress by peaceful protest and were headed by Elijah Muhammad


A member of the group mentioned changed their name. Who is he?

A boxer by the name of Cassius Clay changed his name to Muhammed Ali


Another follower was Malcom Little

What was he famously known by?

Malcom Little is also known as Malcom X and he believed that the civil rights movements were holding Americans back.


What changed about the Student Non-violent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) in 1966?

In 1966, the SNCC became more radical when a black student called Stokey Carmichael was elected chairman


Who were the Black Panthers?

They were more radical than the post-1966 SNCC and had 2000 members (plus a small private army)

They believed that they should carry guns to force whites to give them rights

They clashed with the police many times and killed 9 officers between 1967-69


Where did most race riots take place?

Supprisingly, they were mostly in the northern states and started due to poor relations between black Americans and the police.


What did most blacks feel about the police compared to blacks?

Most black Americans felt that they had less protection than whites die to most police being white-working class


What were the most serious race riots?

The Watts Riot of Los Angeles in 1965 which involved 30,000+ people

And the Detroit Riots in July 1966 which over 7,000 people were arrested
