What do steps doyou need to do before you begin the walking stand by assistance skill?

  1. State common care beginning script
  2. Wash your hand
  3. Put on gloves
  4. Ensure the client is in the proper body position
  5. Discuss the destination and distance with the care recipient (20 feet)
  6. Check that the client is wearing non-skid shoes

How do you assist them to stand afterwards without a transfer belt?

  1. Ask the client to move forward towards the edge (last half of the chair “can you scoot closer towards me?) before they stand
  2. Assist the client with positioning their knees and feet about shoulder width apart with the feet flat on the floor.
    (IMP:Check the clients positioning before they stand)
    3.Stand on the clients affected weak side if they have one
    4.Ask the client to place their non-affected hand on the chair arm
    5.Ask the client to rock forward three times for momentum and push up from the chair with their arm “on the count of three”
    6.Place a hand near the client’s back in case they need support while they stand up.
    7.Ask how the consumer feels when they are standing and if they are steady
    8.Ensure the client has proper body alignment.

How do you assist them to walk once they are standing (with stand-by walking assistance) and in proper body alignment and positioning?

  1. State the clients destination
  2. Walk with the client, standing slightly behind and to one side (the affected side), with your arm near their back
  3. Assist the client to there destination (IMP-Make sure to talk with the client while you are walking with them, often asking if they are steady and feel safe.

How do you turn a client with stand-by walking assistance while you walking?

  1. Ask them if you can assist them with turning
  2. If they consent, have your hand on their back (make sure its the unaffected side) and the other hand in front in a wave motion
  3. While you are doing this, you both need to turn slowly
