Landslides buried buildings and people and blocked access to roads and cut of telephone lines
Diarrhoea and other diseases spread due to lack of clean water
Freezing winter conditions shortly after caused more casualties and meant rescue and rebuilding operations were difficult
Short term relief
Pakistan army was initially slow to respond
Help from India was refused due to political tensions
Help didn’t reach many areas for days or weeks and many had to be rescued by hand without any help
Tents, blankets and medical supplies were distributed although it took up to a month to reach most areas
Long term recovery
Improved building codes! New construction standards were developed for earthquake resistant buildings.
Earthquake reconstruction and rehabilitation authority undergo large scale reconstruction if homes, schools and infrastructure.
Slow reconstruction, many schools and health facilities took years to rebuild
Funding and corruption issues, aid mismanagement
