Pathophysiology

Excessive production of thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3)
Results in increased
- MBR
- heart rate
- glucose usage
- GI motility

Commonly affected age group

Middle age to geriatric cats

Main aetiology

Thyroid tumour
- usually functional adenoma in cats
- usually carcinoma in dogs

Other factors influencing development (2)

Excessive iodine exposure from environment
Fish and liver based diets

What conditions are secondary to hyperthyroidism (3)

Hypertension
Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy
CRF

Clinical signs (10)

Increased appetite
Weight loss
Hyperactivity
Hypertension
Tachycardia
Arrhythmia
Murmur
Palpable goitre
Low stress tolerance
Skin and coat changes

Diagnosis (7)

Hx/cs/exam
Haem
- +pcv/+hgb/+rbc count/size
Biochem
- +liver enzymes (mild)
Blood glucose/urinalysis
- rule out d.mellitus
Thyroid function tests
TSH test
- decrease due to compensation
