Acetaminophen
Generic name: Tylenol
Type: Non-NSAID
Use: pain reliever and fever reducer
Dose: 500-1000mg (2x 500mg tablets)
Pediatric dosing: 160mg/5ml and standard dosing is 15mg/kg
Contraindications/ Side effects: Filtered through the liver and cause increased damage
Adenosine
Generic name: Adenocard
Type: antiarrhythmic
Use : Convert Supraventricular Tachycardia (SVT)
Dose (How to take): Provider does it
Contraindications/ Side effects: Death (stops heart)
Afrin Nasal Spray
Generic name: Oxymetazoline HCL
Type: vasoconstrictor
Use: Treats nasal congestion by shrinking the swollen mucous membranes; treats nose bleeds
Dose (How to take): 30mL spray
Contraindications/ Side effects: Can cause rebound swelling and increased nasal congestion
Albuterol Sulfate
Type: Bronchodilator
Use (What it does): Treats bronchospasms in patients with RSV, Asthma, COPD and other respiratory illness
Dose: Prefilled
Contraindications/ Side effects: Anxiety, shakes/tremors, increased/irregular HR
Aspirin
Type: Antiplatelet
Use (What it does): Treats chest pain and potential heart attacks. Prevents blood clots.
Dose (How to take): 81-324mg (4x tabs)
Contraindications/ Side effects: Can cause increased bleeding in patients who have intestinal bleeding, ulcers, blood clotting disorders and anemia
Atropine
Type: HR
Use (What it does): Treats symptomatic bradycardia
Dose (How to take): 0.5-1mg IV
Contraindications/ Side effects: Increases HR
Cefazolin
Generic name: Ancef
Type: Cephalosporin antibiotic
Use: Treat bacterial infections
Dose (How to take): 250mg- 1g IVPB in 500mL or 1000mL Normal saline
Contraindications/ Side effects: Should not be given to patients allergic to penicillin family antibiotics.
Ceftriaxone
Generic name: Rocephin
Type: Cephalosporin antibiotic
Use (What it does): Treat bacterial infections
Dose (How to take):
->IM- mix with 1% Lidocaine for comfort
->IV- mix with Normal Saline
Contraindications/ Side effects: Check with the provider if patient has allergy to penicillin family
Clindamycin
Generic name: Cleocin
Type: Antibiotic
Use (What it does): Treat bacterial infections including strep throat, ear infections, pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) and pneumonia.
Dose (How to take):300-900 mg IVPB in 500mL-1000mL Saline bag
Contraindications/ Side effects: Watch for diarrhea and rashes with sensitivity to this medication
Given as an alternative medicine to those of the penicillin family.
Clonidine
Generic name: Catrapres, Clophelin
Type: BP
Use (What it does): Lowers BP via decrease of peripheral vascular resistance
Dose (How to take): 1 (0.1) Tablet
Contraindications/ Side effects:
-Monitor the patient for fast, slow, pounding, or uneven heartbeat, light headedness, dizziness, and fainting
Dexamethasone
Generic name: Decadron Type: Corticosteroid Use (What it does): decreases swelling throughout the airways Dose (How to take): -->Arm- 4MG IM or Slow IV Push -->Butt- 8MG IM or Slow IV Push --> They come in 4mg/mL doses Contraindications/ Side effects: May increase the blood sugar in diabetic patients because it is a glucocorticoid.
Dextrose 50%
Type: Sugar water
Use (What it does): Treats symptomatic hypoglycemia (Low blood sugar)
Dose (How to take): (1mL/kg IV)
Contraindications/ Side effects: Increased blood sugar
Diazepam
Generic name: Valium
Type: Sedative
Use (What it does): Treats anxiety(mostly), muscle spasms or seizures
Dose (How to take): 2-10 mg IV or IM
Contraindications/ Side effects: Cause drowsiness, slurred speech, and impaired coordination
*Patient has to have family present to administer (they have to drive)
Diphenhydramine
Generic name: Benadryl
Type: Antihistamine
Use (What it does): Treats allergic reactions and anaphylaxis
Dose (How to take): 25-50 mg Slow IV Push or IM
Contraindications/ Side effects: Sedative effects. Can knock out patient if rapidly pushed. Use IV if possible to push slow in order to decrease side fx
Epinephrine
Type: Vasoconstrictor
Use (What it does): Treats patients suffering from asthma, allergic reactions, or other types of allergic reactions
Dose (How to take): 1:1000 (DOC ONLY) IM ONLY
Contraindications/ Side effects: Increases BP and HR; May cause patient to be jittery
Famotidine
Generic name: Pepcid
Type: Antacid and Antihistamine
Use (What it does): Given as a histamine blocker in severe allergic reactions or as an antacid in patients with GERD or other GI-related presentations
Dose (How to take): 20-40mg IVPB in 500 mL or 1000mL
Contraindications/ Side effects: May lead to a prolonged QT interval or other cardiac arrhythmia
Ibuprofen
Generic name: Motrin
Type: Non- Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drug
Use (What it does): Treats fever and mild to moderate pain
Dose (How to take):
-> Adult - TAUC = 1 600mg PO tablet
-> Pediatriac- 100mg/5mL
Contraindications/ Side effects:
Ipratropium Bromide
Generic name: Atrovent
Type: Bronchodilator
Use (What it does): Treat bronchospasms associated with COPD, Emphysema, Asthma and respiratory illnesses
Dose (How to take): Prefilled (2.5mg/mL) in a nebulizer and can mix with albuterol for a duoneb
Contraindications/ Side effects: May cause tachycardia (Increased HR), light headedness and shakes
Furosemide
Generic name: Lasix
Type: Loop Diuretic
Use (What it does): Decreases edema and swelling (typically associated with congestive heart failure, liver disease, kidney disease, and other medical conditions)
Dose (How to take): 20-80mg IV slow push
Contraindications/ Side effects: May cause increased blood sugars ; muscle cramps and dehydration w/ prolonged use; may lower serum potassium levels in patient. May lead to sensitivity to the sun.
Kenalog
Generic name: Triamcinolone (AKA- cortisone shot)
Type: Corticosteroid
Use (What it does): Reduces the actions of chemicals in the body
Dose (How to take): 10mg IM
Contraindications/ Side effects: Watch for pain, redness, and swelling at injection site; May cause aggression, agitation and anxiety. All steroids can cause weight gain
Ketorolac
Generic name: Toradol
Type: NSAID
Use (What it does): Decrease swelling and or treat moderate to severe pain
Dose (How to take):
- ->60mg IM only
- ->30mg IV drip
Contraindications/ Side effects: May worsen symptoms associated with kidney failure; May increase bleeding
Maalox
Generic name: Aluminum and magnesium hydroxide
Type: Anatacid
Use (What it does): Neutralize stomach acid (viable treatment for Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) symptoms
Dose (How to take): 30 mL PO and may be mixed with 10mL of Viscous Lidocaine to make a GI cocktail
Morphine
Type: Narcotic
Use (What it does): Treat moderate to severe pain
Dose (How to take): 2-4mg slow IV push (over 2minutes) or 2-10mg IM
Contraindications/ Side effects: May decrease the patients blood pressure and respiratory drive; causes drowsiness; needs to have a ride
Metroclopramide
Generic name: Reglan
Type: Antiemetic
Use (What it does): Treat severe nausea/vomiting , migraines, and symptoms associated with
GERD
Dose (How to take): 10mg Im or IVPB in a 500mL or 1000mL Normal Saline Bag
Contraindications/ Side effects: Cannot be given via IV push because it can cause tardive dyskinesia (involuntary muscle movements)
