Chlamydia trachomatis - obligate intracellular pathogen
Gram negative bacteria
Chlamydia presentation?
- Intermenstrual bleeding
- Abnormal vaginal discharge
- ## Pelvic pain / dyspareunia / dysuria
Neonates symptoms of chlamydia?
Pneumonia
Conjunctivitis
How to investigate for chlamydia?
Vulvovaginal swab analysed by NAAT
Screening for chlamydia?
National screening programme
- annual for under 25 if sexually active
- ## Any positive test, retest 3 months after treatment
What is screened for during STI screen?
Chlamydia
Gonorrhoea
Syphillis
HIV
How to medically manage chlamdyia?
Oral doxycycline 2/day for 7 days
2nd line - azithromycin 1g stat *
* 1st line for pregnancy or breast feeding
Contact tracing for chlamydia?
All partners from last 6 months must be contacted
Treat then test for the contacts!
Which complications can occur with chlamydia?
Pelvic inflammatory disease (peritonitis / abscess)
Epididymitis
Fertility
Perihepatitis
Ocular complications (trachoma conjunctivitis)
