What is infectious mononucleosis?
Infection caused by Epstein Barr virus spread through saliva
Features of infectious mononucleosis?
Fever
Sore throat
Fatigue
Trasient macular
Neck lymphadenopathy
Tonsillar enlargement
Splenomegaly
What are the antibodies produced for infectious mononucleosis?
Heterophile antibodies
What are the investigations for infectious mononucleosis?
FBC shows high lymphocytes
Monospot test or Paul Bunnell test for heterophile antibodies
IgM and IgG antibody test. IgM suggests acute infection, IgG suggests immunity
Management of infectious mononucleosis?
Self limiting - resolves in 2-3 weeks, causes fatigue for few months
Avoid contact sports
Don’t drink alcohol
Which cancer is associated with EBV?
Burkitt’s lymphoma
