Interpretation of ABGs Flashcards
(8 cards)
What could cause metabolic acidosis?
Bicarbonate deficit (GI and renal losses)
Acid excess/ too much hydrogen (tissue hypoxia/ drugs/ toxins)
How does the body compensate for metabolic acidosis?
The lungs try to eliminate CO2 to restore neutrality
What is metabolic alkalosis caused by?
Excess bicarbonate (excessive antacid use, use of bicarbonate-containing fluids)
Deficieint acid (gastrointestinal loss, hypokalemia, renal loss, hypovolemia)
How does the body compensate for metabolic alkalosis?
The lungs depress respirations to increase acidity
What causes respiratory acidosis
Conditions that result in hypoventilation or decreased gas exchange
How does the body compensate for respiratory acidosis?
The kidneys excrete more H+
What could cause respiratory alkalosis?
Conditions that result in hyperventilation (blowing off CO2)
How does the body compensate for respiratory alkalosis?
The kidneys hold onto H+
