15
Q

What do we use blue top tubes for?

A

To measure clotting (APTT (intrinsic pathway) and PT (extrinsic pathway))
Citrate kills the calcium in order to prevent clotting in the tube.

16
Q

What could cause low sodium and high potassium?

A

Adrenal failure
Addisons
Haemolysis

17
Q

What is urea a maker of?

A

Total renal function

18
Q

What is creatinine a marker of?

19
Q

What change would dehydration cause to U+Es?

A
High urea
GFR normal (perfusion is normal)
20
Q

List six liver markers

A
Alanine amino transferase (ALT)
Aspartate amino transferase (AST)
Gamma glutamyl transferase (GGT)
Alkaline phosphatase
Albumin
Bilirubin
21
Q

What might be causing high ALT?

A

Viral hepatitis

22
Q

What might be causing high alkaline phosphatase?

A

Obstruction e.g. cancer

23
Q

Why are liver enzymes a measure of liver function?

A

They leak MORE when the liver is damaged

NOTE: small amounts leak into the blood normally, but this is fine.

24
Q

List two cardiac enzymes you’d test for to rule out MI

A

Troponin

Creatinine Kinase

25
Which cardiac enzymes would you do if troponin and CK were positive?
AST | LDH (lactate dehydrogenase)
