race
a system of classification that partly relies upon but is not restricted to biology, that is used to justify experiential difference in a specific time and place; is a site of contestation, race is real since it has real effects

racialization
a term used to signify the extension of racial meaning to previously racially unclassified groups relationship, social practice, or group

racial formation
the process through which American society is racialized at the micro and macro levels, the interplay between the two, which demonstrates the pervasiveness of race in all aspects of life in the US

post-racialism
the belief that we are past the time when race is a valid or useful category for social classification and/ or political

representation
an essential part of the process by which meaning is produced and exchanged between members of a culture, through language

reflective approach
meaning lies in the object, person, idea or event in the real world, reflects the true meaning

the types of discourses that are accepted and made functionally true, not factually true

manifestation of shared conceptual maps, creates a sense of belonging to a group and historically situated

negotiations and/or struggles over the distribution of resources and/or power that take place through or in response to representation
