Introduction to Anatomy Flashcards
(34 cards)
Define: Supine Position
laying on back, palms down
Define: Prone Position
laying on stomach, palms up, head tilted to the side
Define: Frontal Plane
divides the body into front (anterior) and back (posterior) parts, they do not necessarily need to be in perfect halves
Define: Midsagittal Plane
divides the body into equal left and right halves
Define: Sagittal Plane
divides the body into any proportion of right and left parts
Define: Transverse Plane
divides the body into top and bottom, not necessarily in halves
Define: Distal
towards the end of the limb/towards extremities
Define: Proximal
towards centre of the body, where limb attaches to body
Define: Midline
line down centre of body
Define: Medial
towards the midline
Define: Lateral
further away form midline
Define: Superior
towards the head/top of the body (higher up)
Define: Inferior
away from the head/top of the body (lower down)
Define: Anterior/Ventral
towards the front of the body
Define: Posterior/Dorsal
towards the back of the body
Define: Ipsilateral
on the same side
Define: Contralateral
on opposite sides
Define: Superficial
towards the surface/skin
Define: Deep
towards the spine/middle of the body
Define: Flexion
bending/decreasing angle between body parts
Define: Extension
straightening/increasing angle between body parts
Define: Abduction
moving away from midline (think: kids are abducted, taken away from families)
Define: Adduction
moving towards the midline (think: add, adding to body)
Define: Medial/Internal Rotation
turning the body part around long axis towards midline
