Flashcards in Ionic bonding Deck (13):
What happens to group one metals as you go down the group?
They get more reactive
What happens to the attractions of the outer electrons as you go down the group 1 elements?
The single outer electron is further from the positivley cahrged nucleus, accrodingly the bonds are weaker and less attracted
When drawing an Ion if the atom looses an electron(s) they have a square bracket with what sign?
When drawing an Ion if the atom gains an electron(s) they have a square bracket with what sign?
What do metals always do with electrons?
Loose them to gain a full outer shell
When drawing an ion what do you have to remeber to draw?
What is the trend in group 7 metals?
As you go down the group the elements become less reactive
Why are group 7 metals less reactive as you down the group?
The electron is further from the nucleus so is less attracted.
What are Ionic Bonds? (oppistley charged ions)
- The attraction between opsitley charged ions
Name the properties of an ion...
- High melting point
-Ions cannot conduct when solid- as they cant move
-Ions can conduct when theyre liquid
What happens when a group 1 metal reacts with a non metal? (charge)
- The ion formed has a positive charge as a negative electron has been discarded from the ion
What happens to a group 7 when they react with a metal?
-The ion formed has a negative charge as the hallogen gains a negative electron
