Overview
Between 1891-1901 25% of immigrants in scotland were form Italy
They escaped poverty and famine in Italy
Mainly settled in Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen
Jobs
-Italians immigrant worked in the catering trade
-introduced pokey hats (ice cream cones)
-opened ice cream shops and fish and chip shops
-Mielles in Lossiemouth
-Nardinis in Largs
Good
-ice cream shops were popular with the working class because they were cheap and filling
-some saw the ice cream parlours as a good alternative to public houses, encouraging them to eat ice cream instead of drink alcohol
Bad
-because of the ‘late night nature’s Scots claimed they were immoral and encourage drunks and young people to get together and commit crimes
-these Scots were against the Italians opening on a Sunday for religious reasons
Assimilation
-italians worked long hours and so could not socialise with Scots
-they ate Italian food and spoke Italian at home
-many Italian children married other Italians
-some second generation Italians adapted their names to sound more Scottish, Giuseppe into Joe
-Scots did not see Italians as a threat for jobs as they were mostly self employed
-there is evidence of discrimination and prejudice due to the Italians being catholic
