(9 cards)
because the novel’s event are out of sequence and in many character’s POV’s, what does it suggest?
suggests secrecy - all of the characters have a part to play in the novel and they all have secrets they don’t want to disclose to anyone else
what are the main points about Jekyll in J&H?
- a well respected gentleman
- interested in unconventional science
- enslaved to his alter ego Hyde, despite his desires for freedom from confines of respectable society
- writes confession of the truth (Ch.10)
Jekyll - “the very pink of proprieties, celebrated too”
idiom - someone who is beyond reproach/has a spotless reputation
CONTEXT - Jekyll is the best you can get of a man, making him a highly respectable Vic. gentleman
Jekyll - “the moment i choose, i can be rid of Hyde”
pronoun - “i” - as it is repeated, it shows that Jekyll has confidence in himself always being in control
compound scent - emphasising the undermining of the fact he has control of Hyde
CONTEXT - shows duality and how he can rapidly change persona
Jekyll - “I have had a lesson - O God, Utterson, what a lesson i have had”
broken language - implies Jekyll is losing control as he can’t properly form a scentence
reversed syntax - emphasises how Hyde is slowly starting to take control of Jekyll
CONTEXT - swearing to god was seen as extreme and you would do it if you were guilty of something
Jekyll - “man is not truly one, but truly two”
compound scentence - breaks the scent in 2; emphasising the opposites of J&H
repetition - adverb - “truly” - suggests only having one side to yourself is a hoax, but having two is reality
CONTEXT - duality of conflicting personalities
Hyde: “with ape like fury […] and hailed down a storm of blows”
similie - “ape like” - dehumanises Hyde and creates an animalistic tone
metaphor- reinforces the animalistic behaviours of H as he violently kills C
CONTEXT - duality - one person is bound to an evil, darker, side of themselves
Jekyll - “the moment i choose, i can be rid of Hyde”
modal verb - “can” - implies J has the power and ability to immediately get rid of his alter ego
compound structure - breaks sentence in two and shows the themes of duality
CONTEXT - duality
Lanyon - “i have had a shock… and shall never recover”
noun - “shock” - implies that H has a certain trait that leaves everyone in a state of fear and shock
adverb - “never” - H has left L in such a large state of fear his entire life isn’t the same anymore
CONTEXT - H can be seen as the devil as he goes around scaring the Christian gentleman in London
