What was the reconstruction era?
From 1865-1877, a period after the Civil War when the U.S gov. tried to rebuild the South & give rights to formerly enslaved people.
(Ex. Passing laws to help black Americans gain citizenship, vote & have legal protections).
What progress was made for and by African Americans during the reconstruction era?
• Freedom for Slavery (13th amendment, 1865, abolished slavery in U.S.)
• Citizensip & rights (14th amendment, 1868, granted African Americans citizenship & equal protection under the law)
• Voting Rights (15th amendment, 1870, gave black men the right to vote)
• Political Participation (African Americans were elected to local, state, and even national offices, including Congress)
• Education (Schools for Black Children and colleges were established)
• Economic Progress (Some African Americans acquired land, started businesses, and worked in skilled trades)
• Community Growth (Black churches and social organizations became more important centers of support and activism)
How did reconstruction come to an end?
Ended in 1877 due to combination of political compromises, violence, and shifting priorities.
• Rise of White supremacist Groups (ex. Klu Klux Klan)
• Northern indifference (Northern politicians & public lost interest in southern racial issues)
• Southern “redemption” (White Southern democrats known as “redeemers,” regained political power and reversed many reconstruction reforms)
• Jim Crow Laws (After federal troops left, Southern states enacted segregation laws & voter restrictions)
What is the 13th amendment?
Passed in 1865, officially ended slavery in the U.S.
What was the 14th amendment?
Passed in 1868, gave citizenship to anyone born or naturalized in the U.S., including formerly enslaved people.
What was the 15th amendment?
Passed in 1870, gave black men the right to vote.
What are black Codes, how do they differ from Jim Crow Laws?
Black codes were about controlling freed slaves right after the Civil War. (Ex. restricting rights like voting, owning land, and traveling freely)
Jim Crow Laws were about enforcing racial segregation and discrimination for nearly 100 years. (Ex. Created separate schools, restaurants, transportation, & other public places)
What is “40 acres”?
Refers to a promise made in 1865 to give freed black Americans 40 acres of land to help them start a new life after slavery. However the U.S. gov. took back the land and gave it to white landowners instead.
What is the Klu Kkux Klan?
Founded in 1865 after the civil war was a racist hate group. Who used violence and threats to keep black peoples from having rights, voting, and gaining power.
What is emancipation
Being set free from slavery

• confederate refers to people or things related to the confederacy. which was a group of southern states that broke away from the U.S. in 1861.

The false belief that white people are superior to people of other races
