tight- lots of cohesive devices, loose- few cohesive devices
what is one aspect which may influence how many devices are used?
has to be considered how many are needed for the readers to be able to make the necessary connections
what is the ‘least effort’ principle?
the idea that in texts cohesive devices will be used as little as possible yet the type of text still making sense for what it is. e.g. shopping lists wont have and between every word
what are one of the main challenges when producing texts?
trying to predict what kinds of connections readers can make for themselves

cohesion- yes, coherence, no- in our minds too

the expectations are very different for different cultures, groups, and communities of practice. what may seem coherent to one group may not be to another

ideology- we accept structures of different kinds of texts as natural without knowing why and without questioning where the rules originally came from
