How is time perceived?
There is a linear perception of time
There is a beginning and an end
What are characteristics of God?
God is all powerful, all good, loving, caring, and personal
Why do things have importance?
Because the creator created them
What do all created things have?
A relationship with the creator
What is the ultimate concern?
To reconcile (resolve conflict) with god
IT IS GOOD TO CHALLENGE GOD AND EXERCISE FREE WILL
What is the central problem?
Sin and ethical behavior
What is the biggest sin?
To claim to be gods equal while on earth
What is a covenant?
An agreement
Specifically a special relationship between god and his people
It cannot be voided
What was Eden
A paradise created by God, with Adam and Eve
Describe the relationship between God and Humans
Not equal
God is infinite, timeless, near and far.
Humans are fragile, finite, and will die
What do relationships do?
They make existence uncertain
What happens when humans get thing right and follow the laws?
History will end, and paradise will exist
How was life in Eden?
Boring, because they had no free will or choice in their lives
What happened when Adam and Eve ate from the tree?
They were expelled from Eden, BUT, the fact that they exercised free will is GOOD
Define prophet
A person who speaks with/ for god
Why were Jews specially important?
They were chosen to set an example for all other humans for how to act
What was Judaism considered?
A way of life
An ethnicity
A religion
What was the covenant between Abraham and God?
God gave Hebrews promised land, security, and offspring
Hebrews promised unwavering faith and devotion with God
What was the covenant between God and Moses?
God led Hebrews out of their enslavement in Egypt (the Exodus)
Moses received and shared the Ten Commandments of god on Mt.Sinai- basis for Jewish law (there is no freedom without law)
What is the Torah?
Laws for Jews to live by
Messages of god
What is the Talmud?
Human responses to gods messages
What is true about human nature?
It is made of good and bad inclinations. Laws encourage them to be good.
What is encouraged by God?
To argue with him. It is a form of praise.
What are the four main points in Jewish beliefs?
God exists
God is active in humankind and history
Moses and the Torah are recognized as the most important (but not worshiped. Only god is worshiped)
Human life has depth and meaning (because god created humans)
