Art Nouveau/Jugendstil

A

1890-1920.

Reaction against the classical stripped down styles with floral natural inspired ornaments. Otto Wagner among others created a more geometrical jugend. Seen today as an important transition between the historic revival styles of 1800 and modernism.

A group of artists and architects in the early 1900 who tried to make the modern movement come forward. Strongly associated with Jugend.

A community of visual artists in Vienna, bringing together architects, artists and designers.

Chicago School

A

1880-1910.

A school of architects active in Chicago in early 1900. They were among the first to promote the steel frame construction in commercial buildings. The steel frame construction allowed large plate glass windows. Often with terra cotta cladding.
