Kidney (23) Flashcards
(16 cards)
Anatomical relationships
Paired bean-shaped organs located in the UL and UR quadrants of posterior abdominal wall
Extent of the kidneys is from the T12 to L3 vertebral levels- R kidney residing slightly lower than left due to liver
Retroperitoneal
Develops and remain outside (posterior) to the peritoneal cavity
Associated with __________ glands on superior poles
Suprarenal
Posteriorly associated with the
diaphragm, quadrates lumborum, poses major, transverses abdomens mm. and ribs 11 (R kidney) and 11-12 (L kidney)
External morphology - smooth external surface covered by a
renal capsule
External to the renal capsule is a layer of
perirenal fat surrounded by renal fascia
Medial margin contains the hilum-
a deep vertical slit through which the nerovasculature, RENAL AA and VV, lymphatics and ultimately the ureter pass to/from
Internal morphology - Renal cortex
Layer between renal capsule and medulla
SITE OF FILTRATION
Internal morphology- Renal columns
extensions of renal cortex that project inward between medullary segments
Internal morphology- Renal medulla
inner layer consisting of discontinuous aggregates of triangular shaped tissue known as renal pyramids with apex inward
Internal morphology- Renal papilla
Apex of renal pyramid opening into the urine collecting system
Internal morphology- Minor calyx
proximal part of urine connection system responsible for draining one renal papilla
Internal morphology- Major calyx
receives urine from several minor calices
Internal morphology- Renal Pelvis
receives urine from major calices leading to the ureter
Renal AA.
Off abdominal aorta around L1-L2 level
R. Renal a. longer than left and passes posterior to IVC
- at hilum typically divide in segmental branches
Renal VV.
Located anterior to renal AA.
L. Renal V. longer and passes anterior to aorta, and inferior to the superior mesenteric a.
Drains into IVC
