1

What is activations energy?

The minimum amount of energy needed to break bonds for a reaction

2

How should collisions take place for a reaction ?

Must take place between parts of molecules that are going to react together
A lot of particles in the same area
Particles have enough energy to break bonds

3

What factors affect the rate of chemical reactions ?

Temperature
Concentration
Pressure
Increasing the surface area

4

Increasing the temperature will...

Particles move faster
More particles have the activation all energy or higher to react
More successful collisions
Higher rate of reaction

5

What the concentration increasing mean ?

More particles but in the same volume
More particles colliding with energy equal or higher than activational energy
More successful collisions
Higher rate than reaction

6

How does the pressure increasing affect the rate of reaction

Same amount of particles in a smaller space
More particles collide
Successful Collisions
Energy equal to or higher than activational energy
Higher rate of reaction.

7

What does increasing the surface area do ?

Greater the surface area so more particles exposed to other reactant
More chance of particles colliding with energy higher or equal to activational energy
Successful collisions
Rate of reaction increases

8

Which state can the maxwell Boltzmann distribution graph Adhere to ?

Only works in gas (or in solution)

9

What does energy of a particle equal

Speed of a particle

10

What does the highest line from the start to the peak mean ?

Most probable energy

11

What is the probable energy

Amount of energy with the most particles

12

What does the area under the graph equal

The amount of particles

13

What is the next biggest line next to the probable energy

The average energy

14

Particles after the third line equal

Number of particles with enough activational energy

15

Describe the graph when the temperature increases

Curve is lower
Number of particles with high energy increases

16

Why does the graph change when the temp increase ?

Particles under the curve equals amount of particles because more particles at a higher energy have energy greater or equal to activations energy so graph to the right
Collisions increase
Rate of reaction increases

17

Describe the graph when the temperature decreases

The curve is higher and moves to the left

18

Why does the graph look like this when temp increases

Because more particles with lower energy so less particles with enough activational energy to react

19

No molecules have...

Zero energy

20

For a maxwell boltzmann the plot starts...

At 0,0

21

What is a catalyst ?

Speeds up a reaction without being used up and providing an alternate pathaway

22

What are Catalytic converters

A honey comb made of a ceramic material coated with platinum and rhodium metals
Honey comb shape provides large surface area - metal goes a long way

23

What do catalytic converters do in petrol engine cars

Reduce levels of a number of polluting gas

24

What happens to polluting gas when they pass over catalyst

React with each other to form less harmful products
Carbon monoxide + nitrogen oxide -> nitrogen + carbon dioxide
