Flashcards in KMS - Lecture 8 & 9 - Dural Venous Sinuses Deck (36):
In a general sense, what are the dural venous sinuses?
Endothelial-lined spaces between opposed layers of dura
What do the dural venous sinuses collect?
Blood and CSF
Where do the dural venous sinuses collect from?
Brain via bridging veins
Vertebral column - via vertebral venous plexus
What is the diploe?
Highly vascular layer between inner and outer tables of the calvaria
Or, some douche who makes electronic music.
What are the emissary veins?
Veins which communicate between the dural sinuses and the veins of the scalp or diplo.
Receives blood from the:
Do the emissary veins have valves?
What is the ultimate destination for the sinuses?
Internal jugular vein
How many sinuses do we learn about?
Where does the superior sagittal sinus end?
Confluens of sinuses
What vessels does the superior sagittal sinus collect from?
CSF - via arachnoid granulations at venous lacunae
Where does the inferior sagittal sinus end?
What does the inferior sagittal sinus drain?
Where does the straight sinus end?
Confluens of sinuses
What does the straight sinus drain?
Inferior sagittal sinus
Great cerebral vein - drains core of cerebrum
Where does the transverse sinus end?
What is the transverse sinus a continuation of?
Right transverse sinus - continuation of superior sagittal sinus
Left transverse sinus - continuation of straight sinus
What does the sigmoid sinus become confluent with?
jugular bulb at jugular foramen
What does the sigmoid sinus drain?
Superior petrosal sinus at juncture with transverse sinus
Inferior petrosal sinus at juncture with jugular bulb
Where does the occipital sinus drain?
Confluens of sinus
What vessels does the occipital sinus drain?
Surrounds foramen magnum as the marginal sinus to communicate with basilar sinus
What is the confluens of sinuses a juncture for? How common is it?
Occurs in 30-40% of individuals
Where is the sphenoparietal sinus?
Along posterior edge of the lesser wing of sphenoid bone
What does the sphenoparietal sinus drain?
Drains dura to cavernous sinus
What does the cavernous sinus communicate with?
Anterior and posterior to sella turcica
- via anterior and posterior intercavernous sinuses
What does the outer wall of the cavernous sinus house?
CNs III, IV, V1, V2
What is internal to the cavernous sinus?
What does the cavernous sinus drain?
Superior opthalmic vein
Emissary veins from pterygoid plexus
How do the bilateral cavernous sinuses communicate with each other?
via intercavernous sinuses
- located in diaphragma sellae anterior and posterior to hypophysial stalk
How does the cavernous sinus drain itself?
Posteriorly via superior and inferior petrosal sinuses
What does the superior petrosal sinus drain?
- posterior to junction of transverse and sigmoid sinuses
What vessels does the superior petrosal sinus drain?
Where does the inferior petrosal sinus drain?
Drains the cavernous sinus posteriorly to the junction of the sigmoid sinus and jugular bulb
What vessels does the inferior petrosal sinus receive?
Veins of pons, medulla, and inferior cerebellum
Where is the basilar plexus?
on basilar portion of the occipital bone
Where does the basilar plexus drain?
"marginal" portion of the occipital sinus
