What are key science skills?
Key science skills involve the ability to design, conduct, analyze, and evaluate scientific investigations.
What are the steps in psychology research?
- Identify a problem – Determine the research question or issue to be studied.
- Form a testable hypothesis – Develop a clear, testable prediction about the relationship between variables.
- Design a method – Plan how the study will be conducted, including selecting participants, materials, and procedures.
- Collect data – Gather information through experiments, surveys, observations, or other methods.
- Analyse data – Use statistical techniques to interpret the results.
- Reach conclusions – Determine whether the hypothesis is supported or needs to be revised.
- Report the findings – Share the results with others through reports, journal articles, or presentations.
What are research aims?
Research aims describe the overall main idea of a study—what the researcher intends to investigate or achieve.
what is an Independent Variable?
The independent variable is the variable that is deliberately manipulated by the researcher to test its effect on the dependent variable.
eg. In a study on sleep and memory, the IV could be the amount of sleep participants get
what is a dependant variable?
The dependent variable is the variable that is measured in an experiment to determine the effect of the independent variable.
eg. In a study on sleep and memory, the DV could be memory performance
What is a controlled variable?
A controlled variable is any factor in an experiment that is kept constant to ensure that only the independent variable affects the dependent variable.
eg. In a study on sleep and memory, controlled variables could include the time of day the memory test is given, the difficulty of the test, and the environment where participants sleep.
What is a hypothesis?
A hypothesis is a testable prediction about the relationship between variables in a study. It states what the researcher expects to find.
What five things need to be included when writing a hypothesis?
- The independent variable (IV) – What is being manipulated.
- The dependent variable (DV) – What is being measured.
- The population – The group of people the study is focused on.
- The direction of the effect – Whether an increase or decrease is expected.
- A clear, testable statement – A specific prediction that can be tested.
“It is hypothesised that Year 12 students who get 8 hours of sleep (IV) will score higher on a memory test (DV) compared to students who get 4 hours of sleep, in a sample of Australian Year 12 students (population).”
