Lab 3 Flashcards
Atoms
All organisms consist of basic units of matter
Polymers
Made up of smaller molecules called subunits
Examples of polymers
Proteins, lipids, and carbohydrates.
Enzymes
Proteins that speed chemical reactions
Amino Acids
Make up proteins when joined together.
Peptide
A chain of two or more amino acids
Peptide bond
Bond between the amino acids.
Polypeptide
Very long chain of amino acids.
Carbohydrates
Include sugars and molecules that are chains of sugars.
Glucose
Has only one sugar unit, is a monosaccharide.
Maltose
Has two sugar units, is a disaccharide
Lipids
Compounds that are insoluble in water and soluble in solvents, such as alcohol and ether.
Fat and Oils
Composed of three molecules of fatty acids bonded to one molecule of glycerol.
Phospholipids
Have the same structure as fats except that in place of the third fatty acid, there is a phosphate group.
Steroids & Cholesterol
Steroids are derived from cholesterol and have skeletons of four fused rings of carbon atoms, differ by functional groups.
