Flashcards in Lab 5: Growth Requirements & Pathogen Control Deck (13):
1

Where do Heterotroph's get their cardbon?

From organic compounds in nature

2

Where do Autotrophe's get their cardon?

From CO2 in the atmosphere

3

How much help do Fastidious Heterotroph's need?

Fastidious Heterotroph's:

  • Need a lot of help
  • Rely heavily on the environment to supply organic compounds

4

How much help do Nonfastidious Heterotroph's need?

Nonfastidious Heterotroph's:

  • Need a few simple organic compounds
  • They can do the the rest by themselves

5

Defined:

Amount and identity of every ingredient is known

6

Undefined:

contains plant/animal extracts; rich in nutrients

Example; beef extract

7

Aerobic:

grows in the presence of oxygen

8

Anaerobic:

does not grow in the presence of oxygen

9

Obligate aerob:

requires o2 to grow. Uses O2 as final electron acceptor in aerobic respiration

10

Aerotolerant:

survives/grows DESPITE presence of O2  is present; uses anaerobic respiration if it is not

11

Microaerophile:

requires O2 to survive (aerobic respiration), but needs lower concentrations than normal atmospheric concentrations

12

Capnophile:

thrives in presence of high levels of CO2
