Flashcards in Lab Pre-Reading Week 1: Scientific Method Deck (18):
1

science definition

way of interpreting the natural world, collection of established facts about how the world works, as well as mechanism for understanding natural phenonmena

2

hypothesis

proposed explanation for some facet of how the world works, based on observations and demands further investigation; tentaive explanation for phenomenon, proposed explanation

3

scientific theory

well-supported broad idea, may arise from related set of hypotheses that together form a broad, testable explanation about some fundamental aspect of nature, provisional, never absolutely proven

4

facts

verifiable pieces of info

5

conclusion

conjecture based on the fact

6

predictions

statement about specific evidence that will support a hypothesis, clearly spells out what data would support our hypothesis

7

independent variable

something manipulated in an experiment, not affected by other variables, applied, manipulated

8

dependent variable

factor whose value may change as the independent variable is change, affected by other variables

9

theory

well supported idea, never absolutely proven

10

observational study

just observations

11

empirical evidence

data you use to evaluate your hypothesis

12

experiment

procedure done in a controlled envirnment for the purpose of gathering info the test a hypothesis

13

control group / control

minimizes effect of any variable other than one of interest

14

correlated

related variables

15

null hypothesis - abbreviation, what is it

H0, there is no real difference between groups

16

working hypothesis - abbreviation, what is it

Ha, real difference between groups

17

p-value

probabilty of any differences between groups being due to chance

18

p-value of what makes you reject null

0.05 or less
