LEARNING APPROACH Flashcards

1
Q

What are the assumptions of this approach

A

1- Everyone begins as a blank slate. Experiences and interactions with the environment shape up our behaviour and are an observable change
- All behaviour is occupied through 3 different main models; This can be understood through the sitmulus response model
-social learning
-operant condition
-classical condition

Q

Which study here supports the Social learning theory and with evidence

A

-Bandura et al.
-in this study children were exposed to models that either displayed aggression towards a bobo doll or didn’t.
-The results had shown that children had RETAINED this behaviour from their assigned model and REPRODUCED the behaviour showing that behaviour can be learnt

Q

Give 2 assumptions that Fagan et al. followed in this approach and with evidence

A

-All behaviour is learnt and not inherited. The elephants were trained and trunk washing was an activity that was not part of their nature as they had to use rewards to produce this behaviour
-Operant conditions- Through reinforcements, the elephants in the study were able to learn a behaviour

Q

Which study here supports the classical conditioning theory and give evidence

A

The study by Saavedra on button phobia supports this theory as they showed how a 9 year old boy’s phobia of buttons was associated with an experience he had when he was 5 years old. The boy was allocated to different types of therapy that could help disassociate buttons with disgust and fear.

Q

Mention the 4 strengths to this approach

A
  • Objective as it is observable and measurable
  • Gives evidence as to how people and animals can learn through imitations
  • It is a useful approach and can be used for therapy sessions/ treatments
  • Gives a strong support towards the Nurture debate.

Q

Mention a weakness of this approach

A
  • can be considered reductionist as it ignores other important cognitive processes e.g memory, judgement as well as biological factors
