Name the two systems that regulate homeostasis

Nervous system and Endocrine system

What are the characteristics of the way the nervous system effects the body?

High-speed electrical signals that provide fast acting responses. E.g. movement of body parts

What are the characteristics of the way the endocrine system effects the body?

Hormones coordinate slower and longer-acting responses. E.g. Stress

Endocrine glands and their characteristics

Secrete endocrine cells (hormones). "Ductless glands" due to secreting hormones straight into the blood

Exocrine glands and their characteristics

Release secretions into a duct which is then carried to site of action.

What organ has both exo and endo crine glands?

The pancreas

Glucagon

Raises the concentration of glucose and fat in the bloodstream. Secreted by the pancreas

Insulin

Produced by Beta cells. Regulates metabolism of carbs, fats and protein.

Neurocrine

Releases hormone near another cell

Paracrine

Has effect on adjacent cells e.g. Insulin and glucagon. Act on skeletal muscle, fat, brain and liver

Autocrine

Direct effect on itself

Growth factors

Proteins that bind to receptors on plasma membrane and activate proliferation and/or differentiation. Stimulate cell division.
