Flashcards in Lecture 15 Deck (10):
1

4 Evolutionary Processes

1. Natural Selection
2. Mutation
3. Genetic Drift
4. Gene Flow

2

Define Gene Flow

Movement of alleles from one population to another; occurs when an individual leave a population to join another population and breed

3

Is gene Flow random with respect to fitness?

Yes

4

The Genetic Difference between 2 populations will (increase/decrease) after Gene Flow?

Decrease

5

The Genetic Diversity within each population will (increase/decrease) after Gene Flow ?

Increase

6

Mutation increase/decrease Genetic Variation

Increase

7

Is mutation random?

Yup

8

Are Mutations good?

Yes and no
Some is bad because it the new mutation is different from the same genes as others and we’ll be bad in fitness and be a target. It could be good if it increases their fitness because of that mutation

9

Mutations tend to have BIG Effects on organisms with short/long generation times

Short

10

Without mutation there would be no genetic variation and evolution would stop/go?

Stop
