Flashcards in Lecture 2 - Blood transfusion Deck (16):
1

Who shouldn't you give platelet transfusion?

Immune thrombocytopenia purpura

Thrombotic thrombocytopenia purpora

Heparin induced thrombocytopenia + thrombosis

2

What is cryoprecipitate?

Fibrinogen
vWF
Factors 8 + 13

3

What is prothrombin complex concentrate?

What is it used for?

Concentrated vitamin K factors

Used to reverse warfarin

4

Define transfusion threshold?

The conc of Hb (or lower) in which a RBC transfusion is needed

5

What is fresh frozen plasma?

Contains all clotting factors needed.

Used to treat bleeding in patients with abnormal clotting results

To correct abnormal clotting prior to invasive procedures

6

What are the main symptoms of a transfusion reaction?

Fatigue
Jaundice
Fever

7

How to test for protein groups on RBC?

Coomb's test.

8

What is an acute transfusion reaction caused by incompatibility?

Symptoms?

IgG reaction to RBC.

Back pain + chest pain
Hemoglobinuria
DIC
Fever + chills
Hypotension

9

What are the signs and symptoms of bacterial contaminated transfusion/

High fever
Nausea
Vomiting
Dyspnoea
Circulatory collapse

10

What are the signs + symptoms of febrile non-haemolytic transfusion

Mildly raised temp
Rigor
Tachycarida

11

What are the signs and symptom of an allergic reaction?

What causes it?

Rash
Urticaria
Pruritis
Rigor
Fever

Occurs after transfusion of components that contains plasma

12

What are the signs and symptoms of an anaphylactic reaction?

Laryngeal oedema
Bronchospasm
Hypotension
Swelling

13

What are the pulmonary complications of transfusion?

TACO - transfusion associated circulatory overload

TRALI - transfusion related acute lung injury

TAD - Transfusion associated dyspnoea

14

What are the symptom of TACO?

Acute left ventricular failure
Pulmonary oedema
Orthopnoea
Tachycardia
Hypertension
Hypoxic

15

What are the signs of TACO?

Elevated jugular venous pulse

Raised BP

16

How to diagnose TRALI?

Immune mediated response - Abs against leucocytes causing leaky pulmonary capillaries

Hypoxia
Reaction within 6 hours of transfusion
