Features and Benefits:
Light weight and easily colored, it lends itself to unlimited designs
Drawbacks:
Less durable than metal, aging and sun exposure can slightly decrease its strength

Zylonite (Zyl; cellular acetate)

What it is:
High tech material made of extremely thin carbon fibers twisted together in a crystal alignment.
Features and Benefits:
Very lightweight, extremely flexible, strong and durable
Drawbacks:
Can be expensive
Insert lenses cold (no salt pan or air warmer)
NO HEAT!!

Carbon Fiber

What it is:
A form of cellulose acetate used for sports and performance sunwear
Features and Benefits:
Ideal for wrap-around shapes with intricate curves or designs
Can be made thinner vs. zyl
Hypoallergenic
Drawbacks:
Hot water is the preferred method to heat nylon

Nylon (cellulose acetate propionate)

Weighs 30% less than zyl and is hypoallergenic. Will NOT shrink
Has memory, when heated — it goes back to the factory shape.
Frame maintains adjustment until re-heated i.e., in closed car in summer weather. Will not burn or blister from overheating

Optyl; epoxy resin

Used primarily for safety and sports
Frames not adjustable. Usually have elastic straps and rubber bridge pieces for wearing comfort
Do not use acetone on frame, will turn the frame milky.

Polycarbonate

A nylon-based plastic with reduced weight and great flexibility
Lower plasticizer migration compared to zyl.
Hypo-allergenic
Lenses MUST be cold inserted
Avoid salt pans, heat will shrink frame!

Polyamid/copolyamide

What it is:
A high-tech, high-performance pure metal used in high-end frames
Features and Benefits:
Ultra-light, strong (1/2 the weight and 2x as strong), corrosion resistant (20x) and hypoallergenic
Drawbacks:
Expensive
Other Uses
Used widely in industrial, aerospace and recreational markets

Titanium

What it is:
A blend of metal materials
Monel most widely used
Ticral : titanium, copper and chrome
Beta Titanium: titanium , iron, chromium, cobalt, NICKEL
Features and Benefits
Often corrosion-resistant
Nickel-free (Ticral), strong, lightweight, more affordable than pure titanium
Other Uses
Monel used in aircraft construction and valve pistons in trumpets, tubas and French horns

Metal Alloys

What it is:
Steel and chromium blend widely used in frame manufacturing
Features and Benefits
Lightweight, corrosion resistant and generally hypoallergenic
Has “springy” effect, good for temples
Drawbacks:
While corrosion resistant it is not stain-proof
Other uses
Used in watches and jewelry, bridges and monuments (think St. Louis Arch)

Stainless Steel

What it is:
The most abundant earth metal, a great lightweight option for frames
Features and Benefits:
Besides lightweight, it is highly corrosion resistant and soft
100% recyclable
Drawbacks
Aluminum can bend and is slightly less durable than other metals
Other Uses besides beverage cans
Cars, aircraft, ship’s masts, bikes, outer shells of consumer electronics

Aluminum

What it is
Shape-memory alloys that revert back to their original shape, even when bent
Common alloys are nickel/titanium and copper/aluminum/nickel
Industry examples are Marchon’s Flexon and Safilo’s Flex-O-Light
Features and Benefits
“remembers” their original shape even with pts. that are rough with their frames

Memory Metal
