Flashcards in Lecture 23 Deck (21):
1

What are the intrinsic muscles?

superior longitudinal

inferior longitudinal

transversus/transverse

verticalis/ vertical

2

What are the extrinsic muscles?

Styloglossus

genioglossus

hyoglossus

palatoglossus

3

What nerve innervates all of the intrinsic and extrinsic muscles except the palatoglossus?

CN XII Hypoglossal

4

What cranial nerve innervates the palatoglossus?

CN X (vagus nerve)

CN XI (accessory nerve) of the pharyngeal plexus

5

What does the superior longitudinal muscle do?

assist tongue in retraction

elevates the sides of the tongue

6

What does the inferior longitudinal muscle do?

retracts the tongue (with the superior longitudinal muscle)

lowers teh tip of the tongue

arches the dorsum of the tongue

7

What does the transverse muscle do?

narrows the tongue body and pulls the edges of the tongue medially

8

What does the vertical muscle do?

flattens the tongue

pulls tongue to the floor of the mouth

9

What does the genioglossus extrinsice tongue muscle do?

Anterior portion: retracts the tongue

Posterior portion: protrudes the tongue

Both portions: depress and cup the tongue

10

What does the hyoglossus extrinsic tongue muscle do?

pulls sides of the tongue down

elevates hyoid if the tongue is fixed

11

What does the styloglossus extrinsic tongue muscle do?

brings tongue back up

12

What does the palatoglossus extrinsic tongue muscle and palatal depressor do?

elevates the back of the tongue (antagonish to the hyoglossus)

lowers the velum (soft palate) and opens the velopharyngeal (VP) port

13

What do the muscles of the tongue help with?

Gross and fine motor control of the tongue

14

What do the muscles of the velum (soft palate) do?

open and close the velopharyngeal (VP) port

15

What do the muscles of the pharynx do?

change the size of the pharyngeal cavity

16

What do the muscles of the face do?

move the lips, and the surface of the facial tissue

17

What do muscles of the jaw do?

move the mandible up/down and in/out and side to side

18

What are the intrinsic tongue muscles?

superior longitudinal

inferior longitudinal

transverse

vertical

19

What are the extrinsic muscles of the tongue?

genioglossus

hyoglossus

styloglossus

palatoglossus
