Haploid

Have half the set of chromosomes e.g. sperm and egg (gamete)

What is the differentiation of cells programmed by?

The pattern of fenes they express and other factors

Where do signals in the embryo come from?

Cytoplasmic material acquired from the female's oocyte

Why is the cytoplasm heterogeneous?

So at cell division, daughter cells can receive different components of the cytoplasm containing different cytoplasmic determinants

A process in which an embryo gets larger and cells fate is progressively more influenced by signals from surrounding cells

Cells that can give rise to several cell types but not all.

Organise our body compartments and seperate them from the external environment

Gives rise to one daughter cell which can divide and differentiate and an undifferentiated stem cell maintains the stem cell population
