what is a symbiotic reationship
a relationship where two organisms have a close relationship (live together)
in a symbiotic relationship, who is the symbiont
the organism that is not the host - always benefits
what is mutualism
a symbiotic relationship where the host and the symbiont both benefit
what is commensailsm
a symbiotic relationsip where the host is unaffected
what is parasitism
a symbiotic relationship where the host is negatively affected
in a symbiotic relationship, if the host is unaffected, this is called
commensalism
in a symbiotic relationship, if the host also benefits, this is called
mutualism
in a symbiotic relationship, if the host is negatively affected, this is called
parasitism
what are the general rules about parasites
- live in or on a single host per life stage
- parasites typically do not kill their host
- parasites do reduce the fitness of their hosts
what are ectoparasites
parasites which live on the external surface of their host
what are endoparasites
parasites which live inside their host
what kind of parasites live inside their host
endoparasites
what kind of parasites live on the external surface of their host
ectoparasites
what are trophically transmitted parasites
parasites which move through trophic levels by encouraging their intermediate host to be eaten
what are parasitoids
they act like parasites but they eventually do kill their host
what is a definitive host
the final host which a parasite wishes to live in
what is an intermediate host
a temporary host for a parasite on the way to its definitive host
what is an accidental host
a host which is not intended to be infected by a parasite but landed there on its way to its definitive host
what is an accidental for toxoplasma
humans
what is the definitive host for toxoplasma
cats
what is the intermediate host for toxoplasma
small rodents
what are hyperparasitoids
parasitoids of parasitoids
