Flashcards in Lesson 8 Deck (20):
1

Luke's hair gets gray over time, is this evolution?

No (his genes haven't changed)

2

Ants had eyes, but after living in a tunnel where they weren't needed, they stopped having eyes. Evolution?

Yes (genes changed over time)

3

Female peacocks liked males with long feathers. Over time all males grew long feathers?

Yes (species changing over time)

4

What did Darwin originally study when he went to college?

Medicine

5

Why did Darwin want to become a pastor?

Free time to explore nature

6

Where did Darwin make his most famous observations?

The Galapagos Islands

7

Are all Darwin's ideas accepted as scientifically correct?

No

8

What does this graph represent?

Stabilizing selection (everyone moving towards the norm)

9

How was the moth population natural selection?

The color on the moths depended on the environment

10

When biologists use the term "survival of the fittest" what do they mean by "survival"?

Living long enough to reproduce

11

What do they mean by "fit"?

Having traits that help an organism produce healthy offspring

12

What's a homologous structure? (with EX)

A structure that's similar to one of another organism but used for a different purpose. EX: fins of a whale, for swimming and hands of a human, for holding things

13

What's an analogous structure?

Structures that are different by used for the same purpose

14

What are vestigial structures? (with EX)

Structures in an organism that are no longer used, EX:L tailbone in humans

15

How is point mutation different from insertion mutation?

Point is one base different from the original, insertion has new bases added in

16

How is deleted mutation different from inversion mutation?

In deletion mutation DNA is left out from duplicated chromosome, whereas in inversion mutation part of the chromosome is out of order

17

What must happen for a mutation to affect a gene pool?

It must have a phenotypic (physical) effect

18

What's hybrid sterility

speciation when two organisms interbreed but can't reproduce

19

Behavioral speciation occurs when...?

There must be a physical or chemical change for two species to mate

20

Speciation involving a physical barrier?

Allopatric
