  • WRITTEN WHILE ISRAEL IS ON PLAINS OF MOAB
  • MOSES/JOSHUA - AUTHORS
  • BOOK PATTERNED AFTER TREATY DOCUMENTS OF THE ANE
  • The purpose of the book is to guide the nation of Israel in covenant renewal under Joshua. The laws set forth in Deuteronomy show the order of the theocratic kingdom where God’s immediate, special presence is, thus providing a picture of the theophanic kingdom of Christ’s church and of the consummated kingdom when “the kingdom of the world becomes the kingdom of our Lord, and His Christ” (Rev. 11:15b).

Isaiah ministered to Judah between 742 b.c. and 681 b.c. His book was probably written shortly after the death of Sennacherib (681 b.c.). The purpose of Isaiah was to give Judah hope from Isaiah’s message during the Assyrian crises that Israel will be restored after the Babylonian trial.

The Gospel according to John was written by John to a Jewish audience probably towards the end of his life, around a.d. 90. John himself states that he wrote “that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name” (20:31).

III. Philip, Peter and the Gospel to Judea and Samaria (8:1—12:24)
IV. Paul and the Gospel to the Gentiles (12:25—28:31)

The book of Acts was written by Luke sometime before a.d. 70. (the narrative ends at about a.d. 63), probably to a Gentile audience. The purpose of the book is a much debated topic; however, it may be said that Luke intended to describe the expansion of the kingdom in Jerusalem, Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth (1:8). Some also consider the book to function as an apologetic for the legitimacy of the Christian religion in a Hellenistic world—Christians are not to be considered a threat to the Roman Empire.

v. Conclusion (6:11-18)

Paul’s epistle to the Galatians was probably written to the churches in south Galatia around the time of the Jerusalem Council (a.d. 49). Paul visited these churches during his first missionary journey. Apparently, some time after he left Galatia, judaizers came and told the Galatians that they must be circumcised and live “under the law” in order to belong to God’s covenanted people and receive salvation. Paul’s purpose in writing to the Galatians was to persuade the Galatians that no believer needs to accept circumcision, for salvation is obtained sola fide.
