Life Over Time Flashcards
Natural selection
When the organisms with the best adaptations survive and breed
Evolution and how it relates to genetic material
Big and small changes over time resulting from mutated genetic material being passed down over time.
Overproduction
When animals reproduce more than the environment can handle because most will die, so there will still be some left.
Variation
A mutation in genetic material that causes a slight change in a species.
Adaptation
A trait or body part that is developed for an advantage in the environment
How are variations different from adaptations?
A variation is the slight change in genetic material that causes an adaptation.
Isolation
When species are separated so they can’t breed with similar ones, and this contributes to new species evolving.
Why do scientists classify organisms? Is this important and why?
It makes them easier to study and we can name them easier and compare them to other organisms
Organisms are classified based on________, ___________, and ____________.
Physical traits, genetic material, and cell type
What are the 8 levels of classification?
Domain, kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus, species.
What are the 3 domains?
Bacteria, archaea, eukarya
How many kingdoms are there and what are they?
- Bacteria, archaea, animalia, plantae, fungi, and protists.
Name characteristics of plantae.
Multicellular, eukaryotic, can’t move, make food with sun, tough cell wall
Examples of organisms from animalia
Humans, insects, bears, fish
Examples of fungi
Mushrooms, molds, yeasts
