focus on artistic liberty, nature, and the interior world of feeling, the sublime
medieval quests, the picturesque, the individual and the lyric
female and working class writers emerge
lots of revolution- French rev 1789, slavery outlawed 1807, Napoleon defeat at Waterloo 1815, Peterloo massacre 1819

Freud a major influence, as is Marx and Berghson (subjective vs scientific time)
stream of consciousness e.g. ending of Ulysses
strong sense of fragmentation- wars, loss of religion, evolutionary theory
film- new medium and viewpoint
Woolf says it starts in 1910- Manet's impressionist exhibition

James I forms the Castellan Band
prose is rich in style- overcoloured, elaborate, Latinate word choices
newly literate readership- tension
drama- indoor vs outdoor
Shakespeare writes until 1611
interest in anatomy
revenge tragedies- proto-feminist or sadistic, misogynistic fantasies
