Given a material, say X, with its BOM, BOM explosion is the process of computing the raw materials and the quantities needed to make a certain quantity needed to make a certain quantity of X.

For example if you make 50 cars, what materials and in what quantities would be needed? We will need 200 tires, 50 steering wheels, 50 accelerator pedals, 50 brake pedals, and so on.

Given a plan to sell certain quantities of materials ( say finished goods), MRP is the process of determining how muc of each of the many material are needed and at what time and also adjusting this to reflect what the company already has on hand and the shipments it expects to receive for Purchase Orders already placed.
