What is the function of Shape
The skeleton gives the body a distinctive shape
What is the function of support
The bones are like scaffolding for the body – without it, we would not stay upright
What is the function of protection
The bones protect vital organs. E.g. the cranium protects the brain and the rib cage protects the heart and lungs.
What is the function of blood production
Some bones such as the pelvis and vertebral column contain red bone marrow which produces blood cells.
What is the function of mineral storage
Bones store minerals within cartilage. Calcium is an example. It helps to keep
our bones strong.
what are long bones
Bones that re longer than they are wide, for example femur
what are short bones
Bones that are short and almost cubic in shape for example cubic bones
what are flat bones
Bones that are flatter than they are wide, for example scapula
What are irregular bones
Bones that do not fit into any other category, for example vertebrae
what are sesamoid bones
Similar to short bones; however, they are within a tendon, for example patella.
what are the different types of synovial joints
Hinge joints
Ball and socket joints
Pivot joints
Condyloid joints
Saddle joints
what is a hinge joint
Hinge joints move in plane fore example elbow, knee and ankles
what is a ball and socket joint
Ball and socket joints allow movement in all four planes for example shoulder and hips
what are pivot joints
Pivot joints move in one plane. the bones move together as a pin in a groove, for example, the neck and radioulna
