Thompson/Simmonds test

Achilles tendon rupture
Knee on chair, squeeze back of calf
-if no plantar flexion = positive test

Patellar ballottement

Test for joint effusion of patella
Push patella into trochlear grove
Check to see if the patella floats

anterior drawer (knee) test

pt. supine, knee at 90 degree, foot on table
pull tibia towards you, lean back with body weight
deactivate hamstring with fingers
anterior shift = positive test

posterior drawer (knee) test

same position as anterior test
postive= excessive posterior movement

Homan

Test for DVT, pain in calf when dorsiflexing the foot

Patellar bulge

test for patellar joint effusion, place hand in C,
milk fluid down dimple below the knee

Apprehension (patella)

press patella laterally,
flex knee to 30 degrees
watch pt. face,
apprehension if they have dislocated before or have pain there

McMurry

test for medial meniscus and lateral meniscus tears
with knee flexed, internally and externally rotate the tibia on the femur

Apley distraction

Distingishes between meniscal and ligament problems
pt. prone, knee 90 degrees
pressure on tibia (thus on meniscus) rotate tibia
traction on tibia (thus on ligaments)

Apley grinding

test for meniscal tears
pt. prone, pressure on the tibia
internally and externally rotate tibia
pain externally rotated = medial meniscal tear
pain internally rotated = lateral meniscus tear

Barlow test

for babies
apply slight pressure to femurs, if hips move backward
positive barlow test

ortolani test

for babies
place a gentle upward stres on lateral thigh
and greater trochanter area, with slow abduction
if dislocates = positive ortolans test

valgus stress test

stress to knee to check for torn MCL

varus stress test

stress to knee to check for torn LCL

bowed legs

hammer toe

deformity of the second, third, and fourth toes

knock knee deformity
gait is circumduction, singing each leg outward while walking
