(Act 1 scene 7) Macbeth,
“Prithee, peace. I done so all that may become a man”
The plea, ‘prithee peace” suggests Macbeth cannot withstand the attack on his masculinity.
Shakespeare conveys how sensitive & fragile Macbeth is.
(Act 1 scene 7) Macbeth,
“I dare do all that may become a man; who dares do more is none”
Macbeth disagrees how LM suggests that masculinity is proven through violence (killing Duncan) and instead those who go against the natural order aren’t human/noble.
Shakespeare suggests that there are 2 types of man that people can choose from; violent or chivalrous.
(Act 3 scene 4):
LM: “Are you a man?”
M: “Ay, and a bold one, that
dare look on that which might appeal the devil”
The words ‘bold’ and ‘dare’ emphasise his manly bravery.
The phrase, ‘might appeal the devil’ serves to prove he is stronger than the ultimate source of evil, providing an exaggerated perspective of his manhood.
