- the Mackay family donated a total of $1.5 million to the university
- statue is facing Virginia City
- statue sculptor is Gutzon Borglum, who later carved Mount Rushmore
- sculptor only had a picture of Mackay's face, the body is modeled after the mayor of Virginia City at the time
