Flashcards in Making Ethanol Deck (13):
1

How is alcohol made from Renewable raw materials?

Fermentation

2

What is Fermentation?

Ethanol and Carbon Dioxide are produced from glucose solution using enzymes from yeast

3

What are the conditions for Fermentation?

Pressure = Normal atmospheric pressure
Temperature = 35 degrees
Enzyme = Yeast

4

Why is Fermentation carried out at 35 degrees?

Yeast cells become inactive if the temp. is too low and enzymes become denatured at 50 degrees

5

How is Alcohol made from Non-renewable materials?

Hydration of Ethene

6

How is Ethene obtained?

Crude Oil (non-renewable)

7

What are the conditions used for the Hydration of Ethene?

Temperature = 300 degrees
Pressure = 60 atmospheres
Catalyst = Phosphoric Acid

8

What is the difference in cost between Fermentation and Hydration?

Fermentation = Low cost
Hydration = High cost

9

What is the difference in conditions between Fermentation and Hydration?

Fermentation = Moderate pressure and temp.
Hydration = high temp. and pressure

10

What is the difference in energy requirements between Fermentation and Hydration?

Fermentation = Low energy requirements
Hydration = high energy requirements

11

What is the difference in rate of reaction between Fermentation and Hydration?

Fermentation = Low rate of reaction
Hydration = high rate of reaction

12

What is the difference in percentage yield between Fermentation and Hydration?

Fermentation = low (15%)
Hydration = High (95%)

13

What is the difference in purity of product between Fermentation and Hydration?

Fermentation = Low purity (needs filtering and fractional distillation)
Hydration = High purity (no by products)
