Mammals Circulatory System Flashcards
(12 cards)
What type of circulatory system do mammals have?
Closed, double circulatory system
What is a closed system?
The blood remains within the blood vessels
What is the double circulatory system?
The blood passes through the heart twice in each circuit
One circuit- delivers blood to the lungs
Another circuit- delivers blood to the rest of the body
Why do mammals have a double circulatory system?
To manage the pressure of blood flow
At what pressure does the blood flow through the lungs at?
Lower pressure
Why does the blood flow through the lungs at a lower pressure?
Prevents damage to the capillaries in the alveoli and also reduces the speed at which the blood flows, enabling more time for gas exchange
What pressure does the oxygenated blood from the lungs go back to the heart at?
High pressure
Why does the blood from the lungs go through to the heart at a high pressure?
Ensures the blood reaches all the respiring cells in the body
Does aorta go towards the heart or away from it?
Away from the heart
Does pulmonary vein go away from the heart or towards it?
Towards
Does the pulmonary artery go towards the heart or away from it?
Away
Does the vena cava go away from the heart or towards it?
Towards
