What is Northing
In the military grid. Read first from left to right
What is Eastings
In the military grid. Read second from bottom to top
What is latitude
Horizontal lines called parallels or latitude lines. Equator separates north and south hemisphere. 90* of latitude both N and S
What is longitude?
Vertical lines called meridians or longitude lines. Separates east and west hemisphere 180* of longitude both E and W
What is the prime meridian?
Longitude line that separates east and west hemisphere.
What is the international date line?
Longitude line separates the world in half from the prime meridian. When you cross from west to east, lose a day. When you cross from east to west you gain a day.
What is a scale
Shows the relationship between the distance on a map and the actual distance on the earths surface
What is a compass rose?
Circle showing principle directions on a map
What is a thematic map?
Map that shows info on one topic and is easy to understand.
What is a topographic map?
Map that has symbols that show contour line which show elevation on grid systems
What is a Mercator map?
Map used for navigation that shows compass directions (straight lines)
What types of distortions are there?
Mercator Map - polar regions too big, equator too small.
What is a general purpose map?
Map showing different info on one map. Gives a broad understanding of the features of an area.
What is the Tropic of Cancer
Latitude line halfway between the equator and the North Pole.
What is the Tropic of Capricorn?
Latitude line halfway between equator and South Pole.
What are the three types of scales?
Direct statement scale, representative fraction scale, and linear scale
What is a bearing?
Another word for the numbers on the compass.
What is a winkel tripel map
More accurate shapes and sizes of the world. Used in classes
What is the problem with winkel tripel maps?
Still have some distortion. Used less for navigation.
